As important as it is to select the best seeds for the best crop possible it is just as important or maybe more so that you select a good quality soil for your marijuana plants. You need to know if you require a nutrient dense soil or an organic nutrient free soil or a mix of both. Do you need to add something else to your soil like a perlite or maybe some coco coir? In this article I am going help you with those questions and hopefully much more. I am also assuming you are growing marijuana indoors in pots.

The soil you need for growing weed will be determined by how you want your grow to go. If you are growing with hydroponics then you will not require soil and this article is not for you. If you are sticking to old school methods of growing in a pot of soil please keep reading. I guarantee it will be worth your time.

Soil Requirements for Growing Marijuana Successfully

When selecting the best store bought soil for growing your weed there are only a few things to consider too ensure a successful grow. Successful to me would me you were able to grow your marijuana plants so the plants were able to have the biggest buds possible without any diseases or issues throughout the process.

  • Water absorption and evaporation in the soil is very important. When you first start your pot plants you keep the soil fairly moist but not over saturated to make sure the plant takes off and grows to the best of its ability. Once the plants are established and starting to really get large (after 3 to 4 weeks) you will most likely want to start feeding the plants a fertilizer preferable for the vegetative stage of the plants life. To get the most out of your plants you want as much fertilizer to be absorbed by the roots as possible without creating a root system that is soaking wet constantly.
    • This means you want the soil to be close to dried right out by the time you water each time. To achieve this you will need to have a soil that will allow the water to flow through efficiently and will dry to the point of the pot plant wanting more water. This is how you get the roots to absorb as much as possible. Soil that accomplishes this goal usually has a mix of dirt and perlite or dirt and coco coir or you could even just use coco coir on its own if your budget allows.
  • Growing marijuana in pots means you will need to add fertilizer eventually. The benefit of growing pot plants outdoors is being able to draw the nutrients from the natural Earth into your plants without using a fertilizer. Barring the Earth you choose to grow in is nutrient rich. When growing with plant pots you will obviously be limited to whatever you fill the pot with for nutrients.
    • This means you will need to fertilize the plant and soil appropriately for the desired results. Most likely using different types of fertilizer for the vegetative or flowering growth phase of your plants.
  • Organic soil is the best option for any seedling or clone you are just starting off. The types of soil you select for growing weed should always come back to the stage at which the plant is at when placing it in the soil. Organic is a fail-safe option for a soil selection.
    • A natural organic healthy soil with just the right amount of nutrients to promote root growth but not so much that your plant will get root burn and eventually die.
  • PH levels in the soil matter. I feel it is worth mentioning that you should be aware of PH levels in your weed plants soil. When purchasing soil it will be something to look for on the package and when growing the PH level will matter to ensure your plants are as healthy as possible.
    • If you can keep your PH levels around 5.5 to 6.5 your plants will be healthy. If the soil is too acidic or alkaline you risk the plant not being able to absorb and use the nutrients it requires to stay alive and grow. Learning how to adjust the PH levels in soil is a great topic for another article.
  • So what does this all mean? It means drainage and aeration in the soil media is extremely important. You will want to start with organic soil. Fertilizer will help you grow amazing weed plants that will be big and beautiful and enjoyable to consume. PH levels in the soil are important to monitor.

What are Coco Coir and Perlite Grow Medias?

What is Perlite Grow Media?

Chances are you have heard of or even know what perlite is. You might of even have come across it if you purchase house plants in pots. A lot of commercial growers will add perlite to potting soil mix. Perlite looks like tiny little Styrofoam balls however it isn’t. Perlite is actually volcanic glass. When the material is heated to a very high temperature it pops and voila perlite is created. I recommend adding perlite to all of your marijuana pots. It helps tremendously with aeration and allows roots to easily grow throughout the soil.

coco coir is made from coconuts and used for grow media for marijuana plants

What is Coco Coir Grow Media?

Coco Coir is coconut fibers. The coir portion of the coconut is between the hard outer shell and the inner seed area. Coco Coir is preferred for hydroponic marijuana growers however some growers that would typically use a soil for media are now turning to Coco Coir. If you use a coir for your grow you will enjoy the product as your roots will never be water logged.

Bugs will not be an issue because they do not like coco coir at all. You should be aware though that coir is an inert grow media meaning there are no beneficial nutrients in the soil. This means you will have to fertilize throughout the grow process. Normally growers do fertilize anyways it’s just that now you will probably want to pay closer attention to your fertilizers ensuring you provide enough of a dosage per watering so as not to hinder your plants growth.

Best Starter Soil for Weed

If you are just starting weed seeds you can purchase Coco Coir starting pads for seeds. These work quite well. Otherwise as I suggest throughout this article use an organic soil. One thing I have not mentioned yet is to make sure your soil is not infused with too much in the way of fertilizers. You really want to have a rich healthy soil without the fertilizers at the starting stages of the pot plants life to avoid having the seedlings and or clones burn from the chemicals.

Can You Use Any Soil for Weed?

If you don’t care about the end result with your grow then I guess you could use any soil you want. The con is that you probably won’t grow big thick juicy buds like you would if you had a proper grow media for your plants. It’s your call.

Best Soil for Growing Weed Indoors

Whether you live in Canada or the USA or somewhere abroad we can all have the same soil to grow our weed.

My suggestion is if you go with an organic soil make sure to add Perlite at about 30% of the mix. If your budget allows purchase some Coco Coir and add that as well. If you add Perlite and Coco Coir make that percentage together approximately 50% Coco Coir and soil 50%. You can however have 100% Coco Coir and have an incredible grow, fertilizer will be a must. It’s all up to you.

If I had to suggest a specific brand of organic potting soil I would have to recommend a company like Burpee which is available on Amazon. The Garden Coir Organic Potting Mix looks to be an excellent choice as it mixes soil with Coco Coir so you know the roots will have really great aeration and runoff as you do not want your marijuana roots to be soaking wet at all times.

In my journey looking around Amazon for great medias to grow weed I also came across this  Coco Coir  which would be a fantastic option instead of soil. This mixture would give the weed seeds the structure they need to grow and keep the plant stable and best of all would be the best option for the roots nourishment without ever worrying about over watering. Using this media would ensure your roots would be getting a good dosage of fertilizer where when using potting soil it is easy to over water which is not good for your plants growth.
