Growing your own weed can be rewarding indeed. If it’s worth it or not will be up to each individual grower to determine and in this article, I’ll help you figure out if it’s the way to go for you. I know from personal experience and I have my own opinion on this topic.

It’s worth growing your own weed if you plan on growing marijuana multiple times to get your money’s worth on the equipment you purchased. If you’re only growing weed once, then it might not be a good idea to invest money in equipment. Other factors to consider are whether you will be growing outdoors or indoors.

Many people who are just starting out growing marijuana often ask this question. I personally believe growing your own weed is well worth it because you’ll be saving a lot of money and possibly getting better quality buds. Growing your own weed will also allow you to be in control of what goes into the plant when it comes to fertilizers and chemicals.

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves here, let’s figure this out from the start and see what questions you need to be asking yourself about growing marijuana and if it’s worth it.

Is it Cheaper to Grow Your Own Weed?

The first question you really ought to ask yourself is how much money will it cost to grow marijuana for myself.

Let’s go ahead and say that you want to grow only once. The initial investment can be a little high for a one-time grow.

You’ll need to buy lights, pots, soil or another substrate, fertilizers, heater, humidifier, gauges, grow tent, ventilation system and marijuana seeds. You’re probably going to spend about $400-$600 dollars on growing supplies for a one-time grow if you use a grow tent.

If that’s all you wanted to do was grow your own weed just one time with all the proper equipment, then it’s definitely cheaper to go buy an ounce from a dispensary instead.

Now, let’s assume you want to keep growing marijuana yourself.

If that’s the case, then after your initial purchase of the equipment needed – for the most part – your only expenses would be seeds and maybe fertilizer occasionally. Of course, you’ll also consume some power, but that’s a given.

Usually, seeds are purchased in multiples so your second and third grows won’t cost you anything extra until you run out of seeds or fertilizer. Or, if a piece of equipment happens to break down and needs to be replaced.

Now after that information, we can safely assume that growing your own weed is cheaper if you plan on growing more than one time.

If you aren’t wanting to grow more than once, then it’s cheaper to purchase your weed at a dispensary.

Is Growing Weed Cheaper Than Buying from a Dispensary?

Further to the previous section, I believe it’s not cheaper to grow your own weed. In most cases, people must buy more than they normally would if they had bought from a dispensary. When you consider all the equipment required and the fact that you usually have to buy many marijuana seeds at once (and they’re not cheap to buy), you won’t be saving much money.

If you’re purchasing from a dispensary, then you already know what you’re going to be buying. You can select a specific strain and see the finished product before buying.

You also don’t need to buy a whole ounce each time – you can buy as little as a gram or one joint and that’s a lot cheaper than purchasing a bunch of equipment and supplies.

Again, unless you plan on growing a lot of weed, then growing weed isn’t cheaper than buying it from a dispensary.

How Much Does Your Electric Bill Go Up When Growing Weed?

The cost of electricity can go up significantly, depending on how much weed you decide to grow. In Canada, you can legally grow up to 4 plants at a time but possibly in your region, you can grow even more, I don’t know. That’s something you must check into.

Depending on the type of lights you use, if you have a heater and ventilation system that too will play a role in how much your electric bill goes up.

I know from my own experience that growing 1 plant using a 1000w LED grow light didn’t make much of a difference on my electric bill.

In general, if you’re growing only 1 plant or 4 plants, then the cost for electricity will be low because it’s not needed as frequently and sporadically.

If you decide to grow a garden however, then the amount of electrical power required by this is significant and in turn gets very costly. A commercial grower would be affected by large greenhouse costs and I expect they will have some sort of funding in place to pay the bills.

There are plenty of growers that grow for commercial purposes and the financial gains outweigh the cost of growing.

How Much Does It Cost to Grow Weed Outdoors?

If you choose to grow weed outside, you’re going to save yourself a few dollars.

Growing outdoors means you don’t have to spend money on lighting, heaters and a grow tent. That’s a big savings!

Some of your costs will still be marijuana seeds and fertilizer unless you’re trying to keep costs to a bare minimum, then it’ll just cost you whatever you pay for your seeds.

Water could potentially be a cost if you need hoses or rain barrels. If you’re just using water from a creek or river, then you don’t have to worry about that. You might just need a pump and a power source.

Conclusion

Growing marijuana is a rewarding hobby. A lot of individuals grow marijuana for their personal use and that’s fine.

Some growers are in it for medicinal purposes where others are purely into growing weed to accumulate lots of weed so they can smoke it. It’s all about the high for them and not so much how much it costs to grow and that’s okay too.

Some people just enjoy growing marijuana for the simple fact that it’s easy to grow and you don’t have to do much. I]m one of those people.

Whether it’s worth growing your own weed or not will be each individual’s decision to make. It’s not all about money for some people and if they enjoy growing, then it’s worth it. If they enjoy the convenience of going to a dispensary, then it’s not worth growing their own. We all have choices and this is just another one.

I hope I answered your questions and helped you make your decision. Thanks for reading. Good luck!
