I am a fan of using a grow tent for my weed but lately, I have been educating myself on space buckets and the possibilities they have for growing pot. There are pros and cons for using either ways to grow weed. Each growing method will provide a certain amount of yield each time you use either a space bucket or a grow tent.

A space bucket and a grow tent both offer growing areas for marijuana. They both have different costs associated to purchase and setup. When using a space bucket, you will want to grow a shorter marijuana plant such as an Indica where a grow tent allows you to grow most any type of weed plants.

In this article, I will go over why you would want to use a space bucket and why you would choose to grow weed in a grow tent. I think I can really give you some valuable information that will leave you with the knowledge you need to make the right decision on which way to go.

Why You should Use a Space Bucket for Growing Weed

I am not sure when space buckets were first made for growing weed. I think it is probably within the last 10 years or so. There are many good reasons why you would want to use one as well as reasons why you would not. So, let us begin…

Pros for Using a Space Bucket for Weed

  • You can make space buckets yourself out of somewhat common items, such as two or more 5gallon pails, 2 cpu fans with power supplies, LED or compact fluorescent bulbs, possible heat source, something reflective to line the inside of the pail(s) like white paint or those silver foldable heating blankets you keep in an emergency kit.

  • If you live in a small home, then growing in a space bucket makes sense. They not only take up a small amount of space, but they are extremely portable in case you need to move it around.

  • Making your own space bucket could cost less than a grow tent. Everyone likes saving money, right? I am torn on this point because I feel sometimes it is better to get the equipment needed to do a project whether it is growing weed or something else.

Cons for Using a Space Bucket to Grow Weed

  • It is hard to contain the smell when using a space bucket. If having the very aromatic scent of weed wafting through your home is a problem, then you might want to reconsider.

  • In a 5-gallon pail, I do not care how many extensions you add, you are not going to get as large of a yield as you would in a grow tent. If the yield is not of a concern to you, then maybe this is not a problem. All I know is when I grow, I want as much marijuana as possible. So, it depends on how much you want to smoke.

  • If you want to make hash, then growing in a space bucket probably is not the best idea. You need large buds and as many trichomes as possible for hashish.

  • In the pros, I mentioned that a space bucket is cheap, and it can be. It can also cost just as much as some grow tent setups. It might not be as cheap as you think.

  • I feel it would be much harder to maintain a constant temperature in such a small space with very thin walls. The temperature on the inside of the space bucket will be easily influenced by the temperature of the room it is sitting in.

A space bucket might be something a person uses if they are trying to hide their grow from someone in the same home. I have a good article on how to hide marijuana plants HERE.

Why You Should Use a Grow Tent for Growing Weed

Grow tents are growing in popularity at a record pace. I just bought my first grow tent last year on Amazon. If you want to check it out I will link to it HERE. As more parts of the world become legalized for growing marijuana, the quality of related equipment just keeps improving. This is great news for you and I. Lets get into the pros and cons for grow tents.

Pros for Using a Grow Tent for Growing Weed

  • Grow tents offer lots of room and can be purchased in many different sizes. Whether you are growing one or four plants at a time, there is a tent that will fit your needs. I mention only a maximum of four plants because in Canada where I reside you are legally allowed to grow up to four at a time. Maybe in your country the laws are different.

  • Darkness is extremely important for marijuana and grow tents are manufactured so light will not penetrate from the outside when they are closed.

  • Even though grow tents are much larger than a space bucket, they are still easy to move around if you change your mind on what location you want it. Not to mention they are very lightweight. Just slide it where you want it.

  • Grow tents will help contain the ‘skunky’ smell from your plants. Because of their larger size and that they are a sealed unit, the smell is easier to mask. You can also add a carbon filter or two to the tent if you are really concerned with the smell.

  • Since grow tents are made for growing weed and there is moisture inside, they are made to house ventilation and carbon filter systems. This helps with air movement, heating the tent, keeping the desired humidity for your plants. I have an excellent article on that topic HERE.

  • The cost to purchase a grow tent is not really that bad. You can get a grow tent that will fit a couple of plants for under $100 on Amazon. Check this one out.

  • It is easier to keep the grow light at the right height when using a grow tent vs a space bucket. They are a higher structure than a space bucket.

Cons for Using a Grow Tent for Growing Weed

  • Even though you can purchase a tent for cheap, once you start adding all the other equipment, it can start to get pricey. Therefore, once you buy the equipment, it should last you a very long time, which means you can grow and harvest dozens of plants before ever needing to consider replacing anything.

  • Grow Tents are not as easy to hide as a space bucket. The tents stand up and to me look similar, to portable clothes closets. You could just tell people that it is what it is.

  • Once you have a few good yields in your grow tent you might end up wanting to purchase more tents. Not sure if this is a con or pro. This will cost you more money.

There you have it! Those are my pros and cons for using a space bucket vs grow tent. There are good reasons you might want to use both – you just need to figure out what your needs are and make the decision.

What is the Best Strain for a Space Bucket?

I really like the idea of growing auto-flowers and any Indica plant in a space bucket. I am talking about Indica that is 70% or higher with not too much Sativa.

If you want some quality seeds check out I Love Growing Marijuana. This site has more options than most other seed sellers.

Here are a few ideas for you. Northern Lights which is a favorite of anyone who gets to try it.

You might not have heard of this one before but Black Indica is an excellent plant to grow and the high is smooth. It is great, for when you want to lightly chill or when you are socializing.

If you are looking for something that will give you more bang for your buck (so to speak) then why not try Hash Plant. It is an auto-flower and is an 80% Indica strain that is delicious to smoke.

I would not recommend any more seeds right now. I would recommend you consider purchasing auto-flower if you are new to growing weed. Once you start looking at a site like Crop King for seeds, you are going to be like a kid in the candy store! There are just so many varieties to choose from and most all of them look just awesome.

Conclusion

When you are talking about a space bucket vs a grow tent you cannot argue that there are pros and cons for using either. Take some time and really try to understand what your needs are today and possibly in a year from now. You should be able to figure out what option will work best for you.

Good luck with your selection. Thanks for reading.
