There are two situations where cannabis buds will start smelling. The first one is when the bud is just growing. As the trichomes are produced, they have a strong smell. The second time the is when it is being smoked.

Personally, I love the smell of buds being smoked, but I can understand how some might not enjoy it or perhaps do not want others to smell it for their own personal reasons. How do I stop my bud from smelling, you may ask? Well, I have the answer for you below:

The smell from growing and smoking marijuana buds cannot be stopped. However, measures can be taken to minimize the odor. Using a grow tent with ventilation that includes charcoal medium can help. Smoking marijuana in an area with a Hepa filter can help to reduce the smell.

In this article, I am going to talk more about the two times buds can smell and offer ways for you to reduce that smell as much as possible. As previously mentioned, there are two primary times marijuana bud will smell, when it is being grown and when it is being smoked.

So, if you are ready to learn more, then let us begin!

How to Stop Bud from Smelling as it Grows

As buds on your weed plants grow, they have a very strong smell to them, some strains are more fragrant than others. Unfortunately, you cannot stop the plant from smelling. You can do some other things though to minimize the weed smell.

Aside from having total control of the amount of light my pot plants get, I like using grow tents to also control the humidity, heat, and smell. As a structure alone, a grow tent will help to minimize the smell from the buds as they grow.

If you want to get rid of the smell almost entirely from outside the grow tent, you can install grow tent ventilation systems just like THIS ONE on Amazon.

Grow tent ventilation systems work fantastic for bringing in fresh air as well as expelling stinky smelly bud smell.

Since you want to eliminate the smell as much as possible, I recommend getting 2 powered vents. Situate them as specified below.

  • A vent should be installed at the bottom of the tent for drawing in fresh air. Not only will you be drawing in fresh air but CO2 as well which is beneficial for your pot plants growth. Even though those buds are smelling, you want them as big as possible.

  • Next, install another power grow tent vent at the top of the tent and this one will be the one that expels the smell from the plants. You can hook-up this unit to run right outside or into a room or closet that never gets used. This will allow the smell from the buds to dissipate in the unused room. I would suggest you hook it up to go outside, if possible.

Venting a grow tent to outside is a great solution to not having smelly bud in the house. Unfortunately, now you have a smelly bud smell outside your home. If you need a way of masking that smell, I recommend some cedar trees and shrubs be planted around the area that the vent exits your home.

Aside from smoke, cedars are great for absorbing and covering other ‘unpleasant’ scents as well such as pet bedding and cat litter.

How to Stop Buds from Smelling when You Smoke it

Face it, this is a tough one. Even when you smoke cigarettes, they smell. Marijuana is a much stronger smell.

You can purchase ashtrays that absorb smoke. Otherwise, my only recommendation for this is to only smoke buds when you are out in the open and away from everyone else – or in a bathroom directly underneath the ventilation system.

Using a Portable Hepa Home Filter can also help to absorb smoke. If you place it in the room, you are smoking the buds in, it will help absorb the smell.

How to Stop Bud from Smelling when its Being Stored

If you want to be as discreet as possible and not have your bud smell wafting through your home, I highly recommend you try storing it in sealers.

I always keep mine in sealers not just for the smell, but it is easy to access it and see what you have left.

Using a sealer will guarantee the bud smell does not get out. You will, however, need to open the lid up occasionally to allow some fresh air inside. The amount of smell that is emitted from the sealer when doing this should be minimal.

Properly cured buds can last in a sealer up to two years easily. I know this from experience. There will be a slight drop in quality from when you first put the bud inside, but it will still be smokable even after that long.

Just a bit of a warning for you if you are considering using plastic baggies for storing buds. I do not know why but for some reason, buds will form mold much more easily in a plastic bag than they will in a glass sealer. I would only use baggies for transporting buds before it gets smoked if you need to.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is worth pointing out that marijuana bud is generally quite smelly, regardless of how and where you smoke them. Some people, like myself enjoy the smell and some others do not.

Also, even if you are living in an area where marijuana has been legalized, there is still a stigma attached to using it. Sometimes, it is just easier to try and hide what you are doing instead of worrying about it.

I have offered up some fantastic solutions in this article for you on hiding the smell of growing bud, smoking bud, and storing bud. I really hope you will be able to benefit from this information.

Hopefully, this article has been of help to you. Thanks for reading and good luck minimizing the smell of your bud.
