If you are growing marijuana indoors at home chances are you love the smell of weed however others in your home might not care for the incredibly alluring fragrance of marijuana. Masking or getting rid of the smell is also a great way to be discreet with your growing plants if you happen to have company pop over.

Will growing marijuana indoors smell? The answer is yes marijuana will smell especially when your plant reaches the flowering stage. The flowering stage is when the buds start to grow. Some strains and varieties are more fragrant than others and some will smell skunky while others will have more of a pleasant smell.

Will Growing Only One Marijuana Plant Smell?

Yes if you get to the flowering stage or bud growing stage even if you have only 1 plant it will most likely have an odor to it. It won’t be anywhere as near to being overwhelming as a greenhouse full of pot plants or even if you are in Canada and are growing your allowed 4 plants at a time. Four plants can even cause quite a fragrance.

At What Point Will My Marijuana Plants Start to Smell?

This is a great question because some people might assume that weed plants have an odor right from the start of their growth phase but they don’t. The pot plant smell typically only begins once the flowering stage begins which isn’t until after the vegetative state is over. It is good to know this because now you can plan on how you will prevent or mask the odors while your plants start to grow.

Does Humidity and Temperature of the Grow Room Affect the Odor Level?

If your grow room is overly humid and the temperature very hot these both will encourage a more fragrant plant. This doesn’t mean don’t have the humidity or temperature where you need them to be. What it does mean is to make sure you are circulating the air into and out of the room enough to ensure the plants have enough humidity and are hot enough but that the air is fresh and recycled so as not to cause any problems for the plants or room. Mold and bugs are more likely to develop if the humidity just sits stagnant.

If you find you cannot keep the humidity under control then I would suggest you place a small dehumidifier in the grow area to keep the humidity at the appropriate levels.

That being said you now know how important it is to have a fan running in your grow room. The blowing air not only helps distribute humidity and the heat it will also help strengthen the plants stalk as it grows. The stalk will get thicker and stronger in relation to the windy environment.

This now snowballs and if the plants stalk is thicker and stronger the stalk will allow more nutrients to flow upwards to the leaves and then the bud in the flowering stage.

Now keep in mind there is a difference in blowing air around in your grow room versus blowing the air out of the room. If you have a grow tent you will be circulating the air out of a ventilation hole specifically made for exhaust fans for a grow rooms setup.

The Difference Between Getting Rid of and Hiding (masking) Marijuana Plant Smell

Just like with any smells in your home you can either mask them or you can circulate them out of the area. Think about when you are in the bathroom and cause a stink. You can grab the can of air freshener and mask the stinky smell by spraying the air or you can turn on the bathroom fan and have air sucked out of the bathroom to the outdoors.

Well dealing with a grow room no matter how small or large the concept is the same. You can just mask the odor or whisk it out of the room. You can use some methods as simple as having air freshener in the room which might help a bit but probably not. You can use odor absorbing gels as well as activated carbon filters. You can also circulate the air out of the room or you can do a combination of all of these options.

My recommendations of the options provided above would be to combine the carbon filtration with circulating air.

A carbon filter is manufactured to clean just about everything in the air it can. The carbon filter will pick up dust and other tiny particulates to help wipe the air clear of the majority of the smelly air.

To go one step further and ensure any air distributed outside of your grow room is clean air I would also recommend you have a carbon filter for inside of the grow area that sucks air in and blows it out all within the room. As well I would recommend having an exhaust type carbon filter to now take some of the room’s air and filter it again before expelling it outside.

The air can just blow into your home or it can be redirected to go directly outside.

Do Grow Tents Keep the Marijuana Smell in?

Speaking of grow tents in some of the above sections it would be good to know if a grow tent option will keep the flowering smell of your plants inside very well. My experience is they will keep about 70% in no problem. The problem lies in how often you open and close the zipper on the tent to gaze at your amazing crop.

I know I could just sit and watch the plants for hours at a time. If you have a carbon filter as suggested above you won’t hardly smell anything coming from your tent.

Combining all of the tactics above and maintaining your filters and equipment on a regular basis will ensure you have a successful grow and there will be hardly any to no smells coming from the grow room. This is no different than taking care of an aquarium or other hobby you might have.

Regular maintenance and cleaning when required is your key for success with keeping the smell down in your grow room.

Another Option is to Research and Purchase Low Odor Marijuana Plants, Seeds or Clones

A great idea if you are concerned the odor will attract attention in your home when growing weed then why don’t you consider a lower odor variety of plant.

Some plants just have a lower output than others naturally. Try Northern Lights for a low odor plant some time. Another search you could perform is for low odor auto flower seeds if you prefer auto flower or low odor sativa strains if that tickles your fancy. Eventually I will research and write articles on those low odor plants.

I hope I was able to help you with your question regarding whether marijuana smells indoor or not. Just remember to do regular maintenance on your grow area and you shouldn’t have much issue with the scent or anything else. If you enjoy the smell of budding plants then you can lean into the grow area and take some deep breathes to enjoy.
